  • Trust factor. Buyers trust Etsy. They are comfortable entering their payment details and making purchases.
  • Review system. Positive reviews build social proof and boost your visibility in search results.
  • Etsy Ads. You can promote your listings directly within the platform for as little as £1 per day.

The downsides are real though:

  • Fees add up. Etsy takes a listing fee, a transaction fee (6.5%), and a payment processing fee. On a £10 product, you are keeping around £8.50.
  • You do not own the customer. Etsy controls the relationship. You cannot easily email buyers or build a proper customer list.
  • Competition is fierce. Popular categories have thousands of sellers. Standing out requires excellent SEO and stunning product images.
  • Algorithm dependency. Etsy can change its algorithm at any time, and your sales can tank overnight through no fault of your own.

Digital Products on Shopify

Shopify is a completely different beast. Instead of joining a marketplace, you are building your own standalone online store. Your brand, your domain, your rules.

Shopify is not specifically designed for digital products, but with the right apps (like Digital Downloads, SendOwl, or Sky Pilot), it handles them brilliantly. You build your store, install a digital delivery app, upload your products, and you are in business.

Here is what makes Shopify powerful:

  • Complete brand control. Your store looks exactly how you want it. Your logo, your colours, your layout.
  • You own the customer relationship. You can collect emails, run retargeting ads, and build a proper customer database.
  • Higher perceived value. Products on a professional standalone store can command higher prices than the same products on Etsy.
  • Unlimited scaling potential. No algorithm controlling your visibility. Your growth is in your hands.
  • Integration with everything. Email marketing, analytics, social media shops, payment providers. Shopify connects to it all.

But Shopify has its challenges too:

  • Monthly costs. Plans start at around £25 per month, plus app costs for digital delivery. It adds up before you have made your first sale.
  • No built-in traffic. Nobody is going to find your Shopify store by accident. You need to drive every single visitor yourself.
  • Learning curve. Building a store, setting up apps, configuring payments. It is more technical than Etsy.
  • Marketing is on you. SEO, social media, paid ads, email campaigns. You are the marketing department.

Best Platform to Sell Digital Products

So which one should you choose? It depends on where you are in your journey and what your goals are.

Choose Etsy If:

  • You are just starting out and want to validate your product ideas
  • You do not have an existing audience or following
  • You are selling printables, templates, or design assets
  • You want low startup costs and minimal technical setup
  • You want to test the market before investing in your own store

Choose Shopify If:

  • You already have some traffic from social media, a blog, or an email list
  • You are selling higher-priced products like courses or premium bundles
  • You want to build a recognisable brand long term
  • You are comfortable with marketing and driving your own traffic
  • You want full control over your customer data and experience

The Smart Approach: Use Both

Here is what I actually recommend, and what I do myself: use both platforms strategically.

Start on Etsy to get your products in front of buyers, generate sales, and build confidence. Use that revenue and feedback to refine your products. Then, once you have proven sellers, set up a Shopify store for your premium offerings and start building your brand.

You can even use Etsy as a traffic source. Include a card or note in your digital downloads directing buyers to your main website for exclusive products, bundles, and discounts.

Other Platforms Worth Considering

Etsy and Shopify are not your only options. Here are a few more worth looking at:

  • Gumroad – dead simple setup, great for creators with an existing audience
  • Payhip – handles VAT automatically, excellent for UK and EU sellers
